My son Joshua and I have collected many different types of plant fossils. Most are fossiliferous shale and are Pennsylvanian plant fossils. Fossils do not occur in igneous rocks and rarely in metamorphic rocks. They do occur commonly in many different types of sedimentary rocks like
limestone and slate. Slate forms at very low temperatures pressures so that fossils survive from the original rocks.
